US Marshals Service officers, following an FDA investigation, seize more than 100 cases of products branded Kratom Therapy and worth around $150,000 from Nature Therapeutics LLC in Grover Beach, Calif., the second kratom supplement seizure in 2016. The Department of Justice filed a complaint, on behalf of FDA, in US District Court for the Central District of California alleging the seized products containing kratom – mitragyna speciosa korth, indigenous to Southeast Asia – are unapproved and misbranded drugs.

Consumer health, particularly food supplements that make unauthorized medical or health claims, has been a key area of focus for the UK Advertising Standards Authority's recently introduced Active Ad Monitoring system, which captures ads by relevant advertisers from a range of social media platforms, and applies machine learning algorithms to identify and flag likely non-compliant ads, which are then sent to experts to review and act on.
