The European Medicines Agency is charging a reduced fee for parallel distribution of centrally authorized medicines to smaller EU member states under a new initiative that aims to improve the availability of medicines. Malta and Latvia have joined in, and two other member states have showed interest in the initiative, which will end in July 2018.

Malta has joined the ever-growing number of countries wanting to host the European Medicines Agency when it relocates from the UK post-Brexit. The European Commission has said new “technical issues” have been raised that will need to be addressed, and industry bodies have outlined the criteria they say need to be met by the future host country.

Erik Nordkamp has been appointed managing director and head of Global Innovative Pharmaceutical business at Pfizer UK, taking over from Jonathan Emms who has been appointed global marketing lead for Pfizer's Global Established Pharmaceutical business. Mr Nordkamp joined Pfizer in 2010 and for the past year has led the firm's Greece, Cyprus and Malta, and the Global Innovative Pharmaceutical business. Prior to this, he worked for Pfizer in the UK as head of strategy for Primary Care Europe and Canada. Erik also served as president of PhRMA Innovation, a trade association, where he led the transformation of the forum, positioning it as the main representative body for the innovative pharmaceutical industry in Greece.

Tonio Borg, the Maltese politician who has been nominated to take over as European health commissioner, has promised to put his energies into a range of health and consumer issues, including draft legislation on clinical trials and cross-border health threats. He also said he would keep a close eye on the question of conflicts of interest at EU bodies such as the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

Next week's grilling of the proposed new EU health commissioner, Tonio Borg, at the European Parliament is set to be something of a fiery affair following allegations of links between Mr Borg and Rakhat Aliev, a former vice-foreign minister of Kazakhstan who is suspected of involvement in human rights abuses.

The resignation means that – just as medical device and IVD regulations go before the EU Parliament and Council of Ministers for ratification - industry may have lost a champion for their cause within the EU's legislative wing.

Steve Howson has been appointed general manager of Ferring UK. He will be responsible for Ferring's operations in the UK and in Malta. He joins the company from his former position as chief operating officer of Medicsight, a medical imaging company.
