Indegene’s chief technology officer, Tarun Mathur, said that the firm's tie-up with Microsoft is designed to deliver a robust, scalable GenAI framework tailored specifically for the life sciences commercial and regulatory writing domains currently.

The alliance combines Indegene's deep domain expertise with Microsoft's technological prowess to create solutions that are not only innovative, but also compliant with the stringent regulatory requirements of the pharma sector.

By integrating Indegene's domain knowledge with Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service and Microsoft Copilot, the partners hope to help steer the advancement of GenAI within the life sciences sector. Key use cases in the first phase include a content super app and data management and analytics for clinical trials.

On whether the alliance has something along the lines of Google’s Tx-LLM in the works, Mathur said that the tech giant’s effort seems to be for a highly specialized model in the clinical drug discovery space.

“Our focus is on building a more integrated approach that includes data security, patient privacy and scalability as core components using established foundational models, proprietary fine-tuning, and large language model (LLM)-based agentic workflows, rather than providing a new foundational model,” Indegene’s CTO explained.

The collaboration, though, expects to be able to leverage Tx-LLM in its work in the future, added Mathur, a former director of technology at Medsn.

Google Research and Google DeepMind recently put out a paper introducing Tx-LLM, a generalist LLM fine-tuned from PaLM-2 which encodes knowledge about diverse therapeutic modalities. It was trained using a collection of 709 datasets that target 66 tasks spanning various stages of the drug discovery pipeline. PaLM 2 is Google’s language model with improved multilingual, reasoning and coding capabilities.

“Although further development and validation is required, we believe Tx-LLM represents a notable advance towards a single generalist AI that can contextualize and aid many aspects of development ranging from target discovery to manufacturing,” the paper stated.
