The UK – or more specifically, England – continues to lag behind other major European countries in providing patient access to innovative drugs for treating rare diseases and the situation will likely worsen, according to Shire PLC's UK general manager Sebastian Stachowiak. The current system needs a complete overhaul, says Stachowiak, reiterating the results of an extensive new study funded by Shire, the world's biggest rare disease company, that shows the UK is the slowest of Europe's five biggest economies to make orphan drugs available to patients.
